This
1991 Honda CRX Si Special Edition puts a new definition
to the term "Pocket Rocket". It comes with an
huge after burner that could lay rubber all the way to fifth
gear. It could do 0 - 100 km in 4 short seconds and
an unbelievable quarter mile in 11.5 seconds. It
has 475 hp, to be more accurate, it has 380 wheel horse
power.
The
story begins with Vince, who, originally was going to make
the CRX into a boom car. The back was ideal for large sub
woofers and all the sophisticated stereo equipment. Just
when the quest to stand out of the crowd through a cool
sound system was imminent, a small slight detour of adding
a turbo charger to see how fast we could make this car go
was on everyone's mind. The funds was quickly reallocated
to engine components. The first attempt was not as fruitful
as anticipated, to say the least, Vince blew the hell out
of the engine.
Back
into the garage everyone went. The problem was that the
single overhead cams, it was re-tuned into dual overhead
cams. Viola, the problem was fixed.
The
turbo was enlarge, and so was the intercooler. Mind you
this car was tuned back when there wasn't a turbo charger
kit for the CRX. With a lot of ingenuity, the boys at Tecknik
Motor Werks modified a turbo charger from Turbonetics (TS04)
to fit the car. Vince also custom made the intake manifold
to fit the engine bay. The cylinder heads is ported out,
it has a set of stainless steel back cut valves, titanium
retainers and Jun high boost valve springs. The monster
front intercooler is made by Spearco. New transmission is
needed to handle the incredible power output, Cusco LSD
tranny is a shot gun marriage to the engine in order to
keep both front wheels glued to the ground. Custom 3 inch
exhaust makes this CRX sounds like a V8 fire breather.
On
the normal roads, it is impossible for this dragster to
get any decent grip. 1st and 2nd gear would easily light
up the front tires. You have to bear in mind that this car
would still burn rubber at 4th and 5th gear. When the VTEC
kicks in, WATCH OUT! Full boost is engaged at 4800 rpm.
3rd gear is when you can actually drive this thing, first
and second gear is just a smoke show. A computer system
will be accommodated in the near future to help control
the car.
Vince's
CRX is also one of the stiffest ride in town. Whenever you
encounter a bump on the road, your loose fillings from your
cavities will pop out. This is a courtesy from set Drag
Launch Springs and H & R coil over suspension.
The
easy on the eyes body styling is from Mugen. Silver is a
good fit for this car, makes me think of a silver bullet.
Maybe that is what Vince had in mind in the first place.
The
scariest thing about this car is it's stopping power. One
would think only a parachute is needed to stop this silver
bullet, but it only has STOCK BRAKES?!? I think we should
have a fund raising for Vince for him to get the largest
possible cross drilled brakes for his rocket.
You
can see Vince race his demon at the Mission Raceway.
I
don't believe there is a known cure for an addiction to
speed. Once you have tasted it, you just lust for more...
